I suspected this would be the case, but bought the game to support the studio, support the genre, and hopefully be proven wrong. With that background in mind, here is my take on the 'versus' between Endless Legend and Beyond Earth.īeyond Earth, as many of us feared it would be, is nothing more than a glorified, short sighted, hurried and unbalanced Civ 5 in space mod. They added in as many fresh concepts as they borrowed from other games, and in the end the result was a slick modern game which captured the same 'one more turn' feeling that is the hallmark of any 4x/TBS game. I enjoyed it's new fresh take on what a space based 4X game should look, feel and play like. I have also played all of the games in the 'Endless' franchise, including many more hours than I ever expected with Endless Space. So many of the core game concepts such as diplomacy, borders, trade, research, wonders, culture, and victory conditions had all been iterated throughout the versions of the game so many times that with Civ 5 they wound up at a sublime state. Of all the Civilization games, there is no doubt that to me Civ 5, (fully expanded) provided the most enjoyable, memorable and rewarding experience. I've played each iteration of the game, for countless hours. I've been playing the Civilization franchise since the beginning as a 10 year old little nerd in my parents basement. Some quick background on my 'credentials' for this topic. I would personally rank it higher than Civ:BE before taking the price tag into consideration. I'm hoping some expansions help clean the game up.Įndless legend has been a real joy to play so far though. If I had played a demo of it before pre-ordering, I'd have filed it away to pick up when it drops under $20 (USD).

I would definitely agree though, Civ:BE is not worth the full price tag. In civ5, it was boring and mostly an afterthought, in BE, they completely turned that around and made it my favorite part of the game. One thing it got right though, is espionage. that stuff is in serious need of a recoloring. And the tech web will take a good while to get familiar with (25 hours clocked and still reading through my options before every selection). You'd think there would be more variety in coloring, being a different world for each map - hell, even a lighting color filter would have gone a long way. It really suffers from some poor UI choices and so far, every alien world I've played on has looked the same with the exception of ocean::landmass tiles. Civ:BE isn't bad, just feels like a civ5 mod.
